5 Top Tips For Staying Organized!

In the spirit of “Giving Back”, I thought I would share five of my favorite organizing tips. These are easy steps to follow that will help to simplify your life and keep you on track. Each one can be used for your business and personal life.

One In, One Out Rule

Whenever an item comes into your home, get rid of another. For example, when you buy a new shirt and go to put it away, use it as an opportunity to weed out some older shirts you no longer wear, don’t fit properly, or are worn out.

Use Vertical Space

Always look for how you can use your vertical space when organizing. For example, adding shelves to go higher up the wall to provide additional storage. You can also design your cabinets to go all the way to the ceiling to maximize the space.

The Less Steps the Better

Keep it simple. Organizing does not have to be complicated. The less steps it takes to maintain organizing, the better. For example, keeping the lid off your laundry basket instead of having to remove it each time.

Organizing by the Zone

Divide the room into different zones, storing items within their area based on where you use those items. Don’t just put things away based on where they fit or where you think you should be handling things. Set up your “zones” in a way that will make things easier for you. For example, in your office, place all your supplies in one area, your documents in another, and so on. In the kitchen, place pots and pans near the stove – where you would use them in the “cooking” zone. If you process the mail in your kitchen, put mail supplies in that area of the kitchen.

Unused Items or Old Files

If you have items or old files (non-tax related) you are undecided about, put the physical items in a box out of sight. Set a time limit for when you will discard the unused items in the box. Just as you would with your physical items, put computer files you are undecided about in an “Archive” file. If you have not viewed or needed them within a specified time frame, discard the files.
