Emergency Preparedness

Have you ever thought about what will happen when the big earthquake hits or what to do in a fire? Do you have a plan for you and your family? Do you have a plan that supports your family’s ability to survive during one of these events? Have you thought of an escape plan or a place where the family would meet in the event you are separated? Do you have the minimum supply of food and water for each family member?

During an emergency we may lose access to many things, such as stores, electricity, gas, and communication. Traveling may be impossible. I know most of us don’t like thinking about this stuff, and I myself get scared just thinking about it. As a single mother with two children however, I knew I couldn’t afford not to have a plan in place.

After deciding to do what I thought was a small task, I soon discovered that there was a lot more to it. I visited the American Red Cross website and used their list of essential supplies. I’m still not completely finished, however I already rest easier knowing that I have medications, water, batteries, etc in a safe place in my garage. I’ve even packed a few unopened games and books.

Something that prompted me to get prepared and also made me laugh was a sign I recently read. It said:

“Attention please….. No one is coming to save you,  This life of yours is 100% your responsibility”

Here are 3 important things that you should get prepared now:

  • Get a kit (here is a list of essential supplies)
  • Make a plan (a family emergency plan about where to meet, etc)
  • Be informed (how will you learn about current news in your area)
